Nothing
Did absolutely nothing today.
Well, I guess I ordered a book off of Amazon. “Wrecked” by E. R. Frank I think (one of my favorite books is “Friction” by the same.)
Also went to the bookstore with my aunt. Grabbed a book about SuSE from the shelf and showed her what I’m talking about when I talk about my laptop (she’s smart, but with Linux she still thinks of command lines and scary terminals. She’s more of a Windows person.) I also tried my best to explain the Novell-Microsoft deal, in which Novell is getting (and deserves) it’s ass whooped.
Errmmm… downloading Diggnation (did I mention I do that “legally” now, because I paid for a membership to Revision3 for $5 a month? Might seem like a lot just for diggnation, but I also watch Ctrl-Alt-Chicken (whenever they make it…), thebroken (whenever and if ever they make it…), and the Totally Rad Show (which is totally rad). But I still love diggdown, and I help them out with offering downloads if and when needed (like the special members-only diggnation extra thingy. behind the scenes or whatever. set up a torrent of that for my friends at diggdown. they were very thankful.)
Visited Wal-Mart. Bought a watch with Eeyore on it. Eeyore is a very weird name to type. It looks so strange. Also bought some cough drops, for I am getting a cold. I got the good kind, Luden’s Wild Cherry. Best things EVER.
Also went to Baker’s Square. Got a club sandwich. Good good.
So that was my day. Boring, boring, boring.
Ubuntu - Satanic Edition
It’s just a bunch of downloadable shit, but it’s still pretty cool nonetheless.
And plus, if there’s a Christian Ubuntu, there HAS to be a Satanic Ubuntu.
I Love Nat Friedman
For some, the title might seem confusing.
For others, it might make sense, but seem random.
Either way, I shall explain:
Nat Friedman works at Novell. (them dudes at Novell just signed an interesting agreement with Microsoft, by the way.) He works with Miguel de Icaza. They are friends. They are cute. But anyways, a while back they had a conversation on my blog, and Nat sent Cat some stuff in a box because I sent him an e-mail and they all got to talking, and so he got 3240892734892379 coolness points. (not that Miguel doesn’t get coolness points, he’s very awesome as well.
)
And, so I heard about Novell’s deal with Microsoft, so I went to Miguel’s blog to read his thoughts on it. I read his thoughts, and all was good. Then, I said “all right, Nat Friedman, did you update?!” because he hasn’t updated in millions of years (it’s months, actually). And he still didn’t update.
I have a paper to do for the class(es) that I am failing, American Studies (counts as two credits, it is both history and english). It’s about people who made an impact on Chicago history. And the topic I got was Clarence Darrow. You can read a bit about him at Wikipedia.
Now, how in the hell do those two items relate? I will tell you!
On Nat’s site, he says a bunch of things that he’s done in the past. And this is one of those things:
“I compiled the transcript of the 8-day Scopes “monkey” trial into a script which my friends performed on July 4th, 2005″
I went “wait, monkey trial, I’ve heard that somewhere before…” went back into my mind, and thought about my paper. “NO FUCKING WAY!”
I love Nat Friedman. That is a great resource for my paper. I will cite him and his glorious work. He forever holds a place in my heart as a cool dude.
Linux Hates Me #3
I swear, I get SO fucking close to getting Ubuntu Dapper working perfectly, X having no errors, no ndiswrapper craziness, nothing, and then KABOOM. When I install it, all was going well, until it installed GRUB with a command line only. So basically, I had no way to get anywhere.
So, I had to use the Windows XP CD that Cat sent me a while back to fix the MBR, and now I can get into Windows. Which is fine.
Damn that Linux and it’s toughness.
Complaint Letter for Computer Applications Class
Here. Enjoy.
Apple Computer, Inc.

Dear Mr Jobs:
Subject: Important iBook
I bought an original blue iBook from your company a few years ago. I recently tried to install Ubuntu Linux on it, because Mac OS 9 just wasn’t cutting it anymore. Well, long story short, Mac OS 9 won’t reinstall, and since it is an original iBook, it doesn’t have a DVD drive for OS X. I don’t have enough money to buy a copy of OS X, nor do I have enough money to buy a newer iBook or MacBook. This iBook really meant a lot to me, as I am a computer collector, and I wish that it still worked so that I could have an original iBook with an actual operating system on it. Apple’s customer support has been nothing but annoying, only constantly suggesting that I upgrade to a newer MacBook which I cannot afford.
So, Mr. Jobs, I thought I would bring it up to the man in charge; you. I would really appreciate it if you could get my iBook fixed for me. The iBook means so much to me, since it is the original of its type. I would really just like it to work. All I need is an operating system on it. System 9 would be fine, but OS X would be great.
Thank you for your time.
Respectfully,
Staci Tipsword
In School
I am in Seminar right now. And Scott is being the normal Scott (read: touching my crap)
Yep. Oh and I am on my laptop by the way. On SLED.
And… nothing else too interesting right now.
School is Awesome
I bet you I won’t be saying that for long, but today really kicked ass.
Forget all the other classes, I want to tell you about Computer Repair.
That class is AWESOME. The teacher (Mr. Drenth) is VERY laid-back, and basically lets us do whatever.
We each get our own station, with two computers. One is under the desk, which is the one we don’t take apart, and it’s the one we do important things on that would SUCK if lost. The one on the desk is the one we take apart, put back together, install software, customize to all hell, and whatnot. We get a removable hard drive for the year, and we get to put whatever OS (as long as you dual-boot with WinXP, at least), whatever pictures, whatever whatever, all on it. We get to use whatever browser(s) we want, and basically just get to have fun while learning.
He knows all about Linux and stuff, but I think we’re just going to be learning about Windows repair things, if I am not mistaken.
He told us not to download porn. Tee hee.
Anyways, he has posters of what the Pentium 2 looked like, and what Pentium 4s look like, on the wall and stuff, and he’s got a shitload of old computer parts in the back room. He said “Yeah, we have a lot of old computer parts doing us no good back there. So if you guys have an old computer laying around that needs something, you could probably just ask and we’d just give you whatever part.” So, I am thinking, since fireballses has NO sound card, if the dude has an old beater sound card back there, maybe he could give that to me!
That’d be majorly cool.
And we got to describe how familiar we are with computers on the back of notecards. Good stuff.
Oh. and I am the only girl in that class.
Not a surprise, unfortunately.
This class sounds like major fun. I can’t wait until we get started doing stuff. Maybe Dapper will work at school!
Hmm.
Well, I have a predicament. I LOVE Opera Browser. For Windows, for Linux, they are both fantastic.
But, on SLED, I LOVE Firefox. It’s nice, it’s decently fast, and it just works. And it’s pretty, for some reason.
I have just installed Opera on here, just to see how it looks, and (surprise surprise) Opera also is nice, fast, and works. Well. And it’s just as pretty, if not prettier.
I would LOVE to LOVE Firefox on here, because then we’d be like “w00t. Open Source, all right!” but… Opera is fantastic too! I just can’t decide which browser to use. Right now, I am leaning more towards Opera, because I am so used to it, but gahh I don’t know.
Tell me what you think. Opera or Firefox? I know what a few of you will probably say, but I would like to see if anyone else wants to tell me something awesome about one of them.
*keep in mind, I am only considering switching to Firefox on SLED. Not Windows, it sucks there.

MP3s in AmaroK
I have come across an awesome guide to getting MP3 support in AmaroK on SuSE 10.x. I tried it and it totally works. I have a few adjustments though, because the guide is for KDE systems, and it uses YaST.
I use GNOME, and SMART Package Manager. I love GNOME, it works better for me than KDE (and I am biased.
) and SMART is just WAY better than YaST. A lot easier, and it comes prepackaged with most, if not all, of the repositories you’ll need.
So, giving props to the original guide, of course, I am going to describe my process for getting this to work.
Step 1: Download SMART Package Manager, if you don’t have it already. You can get an AWESOME guide (awesome meaning I was able to follow it and not die, and trust me, that means it is GOOD) from here. Configure it, saying “yes” to all the repositories. Don’t forget to install the GUI as well. Don’t worry, it’s all covered more in-depth in the guide I linked you.
Step 2: Open a terminal, and type “su”. Enter the root password when prompted. Once you are root, type “smart –gui” (that’s TWO dashes, mind you) to open SMART with a GUI.
Step 3: Search for “amarok” and make sure you have the latest stable version installed. (the icon next to it will be a green box). If you don’t (it will be a white box with a star on it), click the icon next to it and toggle it to “install” (white box with an arrow). Then click the gears up in the top menu to apply the changes.
Step 4: Once it goes through downloading the packages and AmaroK is installed, search for ”xine”. Expand the
“Productivity/Multimedia/Sound/Players” list, and toggle the latest “amarok-xine” to install. Then, search for “libxine1″, expand the “Development/Libraries” list, and toggle the latest “libxine1″ to install. Then, click the gears up top again to apply the changes.
Step 5: Everything will download and install. Once it’s finished, you can close SMART and the terminal. To launch AmaroK, click the SLED menu, click “More Applications…” and under “Audio & Video” should be AmaroK. Open it, go through the adding music wizard, and once it adds the music from your library, you should be able to play MP3s!
I hope this helped you, I know it worked for me using SLED 10. If you have any problems, you can leave me a comment, I might be able to help, but be forewarned that I am NOT an expert of ANYTHING, and Google is my best friend. Google can be your best friend too!

w00t! Look who’s in the diggnation mosaic!
That would be mwah that I am talking about. Yes indeedy, I have ACTUALLY found my icon in the picture. Purely by chance. View the screenshot. (beware, dial-up users). (have fun looking for my icon. It’s somewhat in the middle. if you haven’t seen my icon before, head over to my digg profile at http://digg.com/users/Gatesophile)
The actual mosaic is here: http://www.fanfilms.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/
As a perk to viewing, you also get to see SLED in all it’s sexy, non-Xglifiedness.
I love Xgl, but hey, as long as SLED works.
And, I am tired as hell. I don’t know if I am going to go to sleep right now or not, but whatever.
Oh, my aunt and I went to Fry’s Electronics today. We picked up a new power supply for my computer. We were running late, so my aunt is just going to put it together (the eMachine is a BITCH to do things with. a BITCH.), see if it works, and bring it back to me later. Either way, I would just like to have my eMachine back to it’s awesomeness.
I miss it.
Ugh, and I have to get ready for school, by doing the laundry and cleaning my room. Ugh.
Well, I better get started on something. I think I’ll clean my room (i’ll sleep better if it’s clean. and maybe i’ll have a fun dream or two.
)
